Shopping in Montreal

Thanks to the development of the Underground City, shopping is a year-round pastime in Montréal. Subterranean passageways and the Métro link this vast complex, which is heated in winter, air-conditioned in summer, and includes two major department stores, at least a dozen huge shopping malls, and more than 1,000 boutiques.

Antiques, hand-crafted jewellery, avant-garde fashions, vintage clothing, leather goods, sleek home furnishings, the astounding variety of goods keeps things interesting above and below ground. With all this, it's easy to see why the city is a shopping destination.

For Americans there's the added bonus of the U.S. dollar's continued strength against the Canadian currency. The fashionable place for antiquing is a formerly run-down five-block strip of rue Notre-Dame Ouest between rue Guy and avenue Atwater. Antiques stores are also popping up along rue Amherst between rues Ste-Catherine and Ontario.

The area is shabbier than rue Notre-Dame but a lot cheaper. Montréal is one of the fur capitals of the world, but if you think you might be buying fur, it is wise to check with your country's customs officials before leaving to find out which animals are considered endangered and cannot be imported. Most purchases are subject to a federal goods and services tax (GST) of 7% as well as a provincial tax of 8%. International visitors can claim a refund for some of these taxes, however.
